College Avenue Retail Development

This Safeway-anchored retail development replaces an outmoded 25,000 square foot store, corner gas station and surface parking lot. It is located at a triangular intersection of College and Claremont Avenues on the north end of Oakland’s Rockridge district. The new grocery store design replaced blank concrete walls with storefronts along the street, and a pedestrian walk-street cuts through the site to create much needed public space for the bustling neighborhood. The 45,500 square foot grocery store and 9,500 square foot shops building and rooftop are connected to the plaza by elevators and a grand stairwell.
