A 25,000 square foot Safeway on the north end of Shattuck (in Berkeley’s “gourmet ghetto”) was expanded to 45,000 square feet. The existing structure was seismically upgraded, the vaulted roof received an additional clerestory window, and a new skylight brings light down through the store into the lower level parking garage. The enlarged footprint included a two story wing with refrigerated storage at store level, and training and office spaces at the garage level. The new segmented elevation along Shattuck Avenue creates a series of outdoor seating spaces, while the sections of floor-to-ceiling glazing give both the passerby clear views into the store, and the shopper views out to the Berkeley hills.
