Last week, Ken Lowney and Nick Gomez represented the firm in San Antonio, TX at MBI’s 2022 World of Modular conference. With two appointments, two presentations, and two awards, Lowney Architecture’s reputation as an experienced modular architecture firm was again, reinforced.
Ken Lowney was promoted to MBI’s Board of Directors and gave a presentation on the design implications of sites within the world of modular. Together with Scott Bridger, Principal of Proset, they hit home the theme of location being the most important consideration when evaluating whether a project can be modularly optimized or even modular possible. Addressing site selection and evaluation through the lenses of accessibility, proximity, topography, and site size and shape, Ken and Scott utilized a spectrum visual paired with project case stories to show how sites specifically effect the streamlined efficiencies modular methods have to offer.
Nick Gomez was selected to be on MBI’s Design Professional Committee and gave a presentation on how and when to push modular. Co-presented with Troy Bean, Principal of DCI Engineers, the two modular experts used three projects they worked on together: 2711 Shattuck; The Intersection; and Mayfair Affordable Homes, to explain why they had to “break” typical modular “rules” and how they successfully accomplished each challenge.
Lastly, to end the conference on a high note, Ken and Nick accepted two project awards: The Intersection won First Place for Permanent Modular Mutifamily Housing; and The Moxy won Honorable Mention for Permanent Modular Hotel.
