Boot and Shoe, a popular gathering space serving food in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere, desired a new kitchen and expanded outdoor dining area for Oakland’s mild Mediterranean climate. Lowney Architecture’s 1,400 sf addition is expressed through a barn typology, paying reference to the traditional and recognizable style and with generous visibility from the dining patio and the far end of the project site. Using corrugated metal, the addition’s exterior paneling lends itself to a rusticated but definitively modern quality. The newly renovated kitchen includes new equipment and storage as well as a balanced use of contrast and accent color to bring warmth and light into the space.
