The Moxy Hotel, by Marriott International, is a seven-story, 173-key hotel at the corner of Telegraph and West Grand Avenues in Oakland, CA. Located in the city’s Art and Entertainment District, this boutique hotel exudes a local, fun-spirited experiential brand and serves as a playful anchor for the fast-developing KoNo (Koreatown Northgate) neighborhood. This hotel boasts a few firsts – the first hotel in downtown Oakland in 20 years, the first modular Moxy hotel completed in the US, and the first modular project completed in the downtown core.
The building consists of five levels of wood, factory-built rooms over two levels of site-built rooms, common space and public tenant space. With just a few different hotel types, 135 King Rooms, 5 Accessible rooms, and 5 Bunk-Bed rooms were able to be constructed off-site, delivered, and stacked within a few weeks.
At the ground floor, the lobby and common space mirrors and celebrates Oakland’s vibrant art scene, paying homage to the neighborhood’s art deco, modern way. The bold, unconventional, and welcoming brand invites a creative energy with its show stopping art installation by Faulders Studio, colorful groovy murals from local artist Bud Snow, and featured curated pieces from Creative Growth, a studio that works with artists with disabilities. C McKEOUGH unLTD. was responsible for the interior design of lobby public spaces.
In typical Moxy fashion, you won’t find an average reception desk – instead guests check in to the bar and are greeted with a complimentary drink. Upon check-in they can head up to their cozy room, or enjoy a sprawling cityview on the rooftop deck. To capitalize on its street-front proximity to monthly “Oakland First Friday” festivals, the building features a visually porous ground level façade to enhance the pedestrian experience and accommodate the open lounge/lobby concept. Additionally, the hotel plans to open a West coast-style Cuban restaurant, La Palabra, and source food and drink from the neighborhood.
Overall this project is a great local addition – bringing new lodging, food, entertainment, and job opportunities to the area.
