Completed in 2017, this 28,000 sf Sprouts Farmers Market grocery store serves as the main anchor to a major retail development on land owned by University of California. Part of a larger area referred to as University Village, this site was formally the site of university dorms, originally constructed for military and defense workers during World War II. Though a difficult project to navigate in its initial complex stages, the project set a high standard for urban development with attention to pedestrian walking and cycling access.
Located off San Pablo Avenue, the Sprouts Farmers Market initiated the retail development which followed by 16,700 sf of additional retail space across several pad buildings.
The convenient parking field for 124 cars serving Sprouts is shielded from view by the corner pad building occupied by Pet Food Express. Rather than face the main street like a typical suburban style grocery store, Sprouts is turned 90 degrees and faces this central parking lot, set off the main street. A pedestrian plaza featuring lush landscaping and bike infrastructure is created between the corner pad building and the Sprouts building.
Lowney also developed a separate 12,000 sf retail pad building across from Monroe Street which builds on the same architectural vocabulary as the grocery and corner pad buildings. Tenants included Habit Burger, Pieology, Starbucks, Banfield Pet Hospital and Great Clips.
