The Orchard Park project encompasses 19 acres and features 13 buildings, establishing a fresh gateway from Russel Blvd to the UC Davis campus. Developed in collaboration with The Michaels Organization, this project aims to introduce 1,490 housing beds for both undergraduate and graduate students from the University and their families.
An influential challenge that impacted the housing design was the preservation of heritage orchard trees on the existing site. Simultaneously, the design team devised an optimal arrangement for the buildings, ensuring year-round exposure to sun and wind. This layout also factored in provisions for emergency vehicle access, as well as fostering a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly traffic flow.
In response to the University’s tight schedule, Lowney Architecture proposed a multi-team strategy. This approach encompassed masterplanning, building design, modular and site construction document preparation, and landscape architecture plans, all within a single phase.
